Ophthalmology is based over two main sites at the royal Blackburn hospital, Burnley general hospital, with services on our Burnley site moving soon to our new state of the art building later this year. We also have peripheral clinics at Rossendale, Clitheroe and Accrington.

We provide a range of services including outpatient specialist clinics, pre-operative assessment, surgical day case, emergency triage and urgent eye clinic.

You will be part of a speciality that is rapidly expanding in size and committed to developing innovative and dynamic ways of treating and diagnosing our patients.

We promote a team approach ethos towards service improvements with all staff included in supporting new developments.

You will be required to promote the highest possible standards of care based on professionally determined standards and accept accountability for the patient as an individual, providing autonomy.

To enable you to become a highly skilled practitioner you will have the opportunity to diversify your skills in other ophthalmic service areas supported by the senior team including a mentor to develop a range of clinical skills alongside academic study opportunities.

It is important you are made aware of the changes which East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has implemented with regard to charging for the cost of undertaking Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS) Checks (previously known as Criminal Records Bureau or CRB) and how this may impact upon you.

As this position is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and involves work that is identified as a regulated activity as defined in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (2006), any offer of employment is provisional upon a satisfactory DBS check being obtained.

The cost of an Enhanced Disclosure will be £48.00, which includes a small handling fee.

In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied.  Candidates can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months as a deduction from the monthly salary.  However, if you are applying for a post as a BANK worker, the payment must be made in full at the time of employment checks.
