At East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust our vision is to be widely recognised for providing safe, personal and effective care.  We currently provide high quality services and treat over 600,000 people across East Lancashire and the surrounding area. We employ over 7,000 staff, many of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work.

A fantastic opportunity has become available for staff nurses on Colorectal Ward and emergency care in East Lancashire NHS Trust on Ward C18a (18 bedded ward). Nurse to staff ratio is 1 nurse to 6 patients on days and 1 nurse to 9 patients on nights. Although we are a colorectal ward we do care for patients undergoing other surgical procedures for example appendicitis, hernia repairs and emergency admissions/procedures.

General duties will include pre and post- operative care for general surgical patients, administration of medication, including controlled drugs, by various routes, recording of physiological observations, wound care, management of complex patients with multiple issues, escalating care when needed, management of pain management systems such as PCA’s and epidurals, as well different methods of delivering nutrition including TPN, NG and NJ feeding.  Documentation is also an essential part of the role, with accurate, legible recording of nursing interventions and completion of electronic nursing risk assessments.  We aim to involve our patients in their care to improve nursing outcomes and ensure the patient’s journey through their time with us is a satisfactory one.  Delivering safe, personal and effective care to our patients must be at the centre of all we do.

As this is a new ward we are looking for an enthusiastic and motivated nurses to really drive the ward vision.  Experience within this area is desirable but not essential.  You must have excellent communication skills, be punctual, flexible and hard working with a desire to deliver a high standard of nursing care in keeping with the Trust’s vision in delivering safe, personal and effective care at all times.  The ideal candidate will be friendly, empathetic and patient with a keen desire to ensure that the care delivered is of the best quality standard. This is an exciting opportunity to gain experience in acute surgical nursing. This is a rotational post, which includes night and weekend working.

Dear Potential Applicant,

It is important you are made aware of the changes which East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust has implemented with regard to charging for the cost of undertaking Disclosure and Barring Scheme (DBS) Checks (previously known as Criminal Records Bureau or CRB) and how this may impact upon you.

As this position is exempted from the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and involves work that is identified as a regulated activity as defined in the Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act (2006), any offer of employment is provisional upon a satisfactory DBS check being obtained.
The cost of an Enhanced Disclosure will be £48.00, which includes a small handling fee.

In line with other NHS organisations in the North West Region, the Trust is now passing the charge for undertaking a DBS check on to candidates in the event they are successfully appointed into the post for which they have applied. Candidates can choose whether to pay this over 1-3 months as a deduction from the monthly salary. By applying for this vacancy you are agreeing to this undertaking in the event you are successfully appointed.
