General outpatients is a busy department operating Monday - Friday 8-6

The dept facilitates outpatient clinics for a wide variety of specialties including Vascular, Surgery, Plastics, Oncology, Neurology, Haematology, Rheumatology, Diabetes and Endocrinology, meaning many learning opportunities are available.

Main duties of the job

RN's in Outpatients work closely with medical colleagues, facilitate clinics, support junior team members, perform interventions for example compression bandaging and act as shift coordinator supporting patients and relatives through there appointments

Detailed job description and main responsibilities

  • Assess, plan, implement and evaluate, programmes of evidenced-based nursing care.
  • Assist in the management and organisation of a clinical area.
  • Participate in the education, development and supervision of other staff members
  • Work collaboratively and co-operatively with others to meet the needs of patients and their families.
    1. Ensure effective communication with patients, relatives, carers and colleagues.
    2. Develop own skills and knowledge and contribute to the development of others, undertaking post-registration training where required for the needs of the department, and in keeping with the development of a learning organisation.
    3. With the department Sisters, contribute to the development of the service.
    4. Ensure own actions promote quality and alert others to quality issues.
    5. Promote people’s equality, diversity and rights.
    6. Assess the health and wellbeing needs of people whose needs are stable or complex.
    7. Plan, deliver and evaluate programmes of care, ensuring practice is evidence-based.
    8. Influence the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice.
    9. Supervise the work of a team when necessary.
    10. Ensure a cost-effective approach is maintained when ordering medical and surgical supplies.
    11. Attend at least 1 in 3 departmental meetings and carry out delegated duties.
    12. Attend Multidisciplinary meetings as required.
    13. Participate in Individual Performance Review annually.
    14. Provide support, guidance and training for newly appointed staff, students, and those undertaking NVQ or post-registration training.
    15. Assist the dept sisters to move forward the quality agenda, participating fully in the NAPF process
    16. Adhere to all the NMC professional codes and guidelines and perform professional and clinical duties in accordance with these and the Trust’s Policies and procedures.

Essential criteria
  • NMC Registered nurse
  • Ability to communicate in a variety of settings with patients of varying levels of understanding
  • Ability to develop effective interpersonal relationships with colleagues in the health care setting
  • Proof of continued professional development since registration
Desirable criteria
  • Experience in OPD
  • Mentorship qualification
