Job overview

A consultant post in Diabetes and Endocrinology is at the heart of an extensive experienced MDT within the Directorate of Diabetes and Endocrinology.  The directorate provides both inpatient and outpatient care for patients with a wide range of complex Diabetes and Endocrine conditions.

Main duties of the job

The post holder will work 10 programmed activities for East Lancashire Hospitals NHS Trust. The job plan works on a 6 week cycle. Weeks 1 and 2 are wards and clinic and then weeks 3 to 6 are clinics only. There is a commitment to the emergency duties rota for general (internal) medicine including out of hours on call on a 1:21 rota.

The department of Diabetes and Endocrinology provides a comprehensive service including a range of diabetes sub-specialty services on the two main hospital sites, two community hospital sites, and a number of other community sites. The service is supported by a team of 12 Diabetes Specialist Nurses along with Diabetes Specialist Dieticians and Podiatrists as well as a Diabetes Specialist Midwife. There is also a very active Clinical Trials Department supported by research nurses, admin and a medical team. Having been successful in our bid for national funding we are working to further expand the diabetes inpatient nursing and podiatry teams as well as increasing patient education in the community.

Subsequent to a vision to improve clinical leadership and access to Consultant and Diabetes Specialist Nurse led services across the East Lancashire Health Economy we are developing a fully integrated diabetes service. The philosophy of the department is the prompt and effective implementation of evidence and national guidance into practice. The department is also recognised for its strength in clinical trials activities.

The Trust will reimburse certain expenses relating to removal and relocation when required the expenses refunded shall reflect the actual costs but will not exceed £8,000.

Satisfactory medical examination is a condition of employment for Medical and Dental NHS staff.

There is a commitment to the emergency duties rota for general (internal) medicine including out of hours on call on a 1:21 rota.

The department of Diabetes and Endocrinology provides a comprehensive service including a range of diabetes sub-specialty services on the two main hospital sites, two community hospital sites, and a number of other community sites. The service is supported by a team of 12 Diabetes Specialist Nurses along with Diabetes Specialist Dieticians and Podiatrists as well as a Diabetes Specialist Midwife. There is also a very active Clinical Trials Department supported by research nurses, admin and a medical team. We are a Teaching Hospital and also a Royal College of Physicians Future Hospital site. The Trust was established in 2003 and is a major acute Trust located in Lancashire, in the heart of the North West of England. The Trust employs 7,000 staff, some of whom are internationally renowned and have won awards for their work and achievements. We treat nearly three quarters of a million patients a year from the most serious of emergencies to planned operations and procedures using state-of-the-art facilities. 

Subsequent to a vision to improve clinical leadership and access to Consultant and Diabetes Specialist Nurse led services across the East Lancashire Health Economy we are developing a fully integrated diabetes service. Commitment to clinics off the main hospital sites will increase. The philosophy of the department is the prompt and effective implementation of evidence and national guidance into practice. The department is also recognised for its strength in clinical trials activities.

The successful candidate would be encouraged to take on specific SPA roles as part of their 1.5 SPA per week.

 

Person specification

Qualifications

Essential criteria
  • Entered on the GMC Register, CCT in General Internal Medicine and Endocrinology/Diabetes or equivalent or within 6 months of achieving this
  • Hold membership of the Royal College of Physicians (MRCP) or an equivalent qualification
Desirable criteria
  • Higher Degree

Experience

Essential criteria
  • Eligible for inclusion on the GMC Specialist Register in General (Internal) Medicine and Endocrinology/Diabetes or equivalent.
  • Initiatives demonstrating enthusiasm and commitment to the care of patients with endocrine/diabetes related conditions
Desirable criteria
  • Experience gained from working in and developing operational plans for Diabetes & Endocrinology services in hospital and in the community

Special Knowledge

Essential criteria
  • Comprehensive clinical experience of General (Internal) Medicine and Diabetes/ Endocrinology
Desirable criteria
  • Special knowledge in a subspecialty area of Diabetes or Endocrinology as evidenced by a record of research, clinical audit, and/or publications in peerreviewed journals or CV and interview 2 formal reports to Health Care Organisations OR a period of research leading to a higher degree & a continuing research interest in the field

Training Experience

Essential criteria
  • Enthusiasm for and demonstrable commitment to the supervision and teaching of trainee medical staff and other health care professionals
Desirable criteria
  • Formal tuition and/or qualification in teaching/training skills

Practical/Intellectual Skills

Essential criteria
  • Good communication skills and multidisciplinary team working. Able to adapt working pattern to fit changing local circumstances and work flow
  • Clinical leadership skills Ability to manage an acute unselected General (acute) Medical take
Desirable criteria
  • Formal tuition in leadership skills
  • Evidence of successful leadership within a multidisciplinary team either in an acute or community setting
