Consultant in Pain Medicine

This post will facilitate the provision of care to chronic pain patients. The post also offers the opportunity of provision of anaesthetic services for elective and emergency patients which would include an on-call commitment on a 1 in 11 basis (approximately 1.3PA’s per week). The elective work split will be approximately 2.5 sessions of direct clinical care within anaesthetics and 6.00 sessions for pain management which will include outpatient clinics, pain theatre work and administration time. The job plan includes 1.25 SPA . If the option of anaesthetic sessions is not required there will be increased clinical input to the pain service.

Clinical experience and training equivalent to Advanced Specialist Training in Pain Medicine is essential for this post and it would be desirable to be a Fellow of Faculty of Pain Medicine of the Royal College of Anaesthetists (FFPMRCA).

The successful postholder will be a currently practicing clinician, holding GMC registration with a license to practice. They will have attained FRCA or equivalent, and be included on the GMC’s Specialist Register in Anaesthetics.

A commitment to a bio-psychosocial approach to pain management, multi-professional working, evidence-based practice and the principles of shared care and close working with other disciplines and specialties are also essential elements of this role.

The post will be based within the chronic pain management service which is an integral part of the wider Integrated MSK, Pain and Rheumatology Service (IMPReS) in the Division of Diagnostic and Clinical Support, with the additional opportunity of input to the anaesthetic department.

The postholder will provide clinical input (a mix of outpatient clinics and theatre sessions) to the pain management service (detailed timetable to be agreed with the postholder). The Job Plan will identify an annualised commitment based on a minimum of 42 weeks. Within the proposed sessions there will also be annualisation of anticipated activity. This will be based on service and business needs and changes will be agreed with the postholder as the service develops.

The post is responsible to the Clinical Lead for Chronic Pain Medicine, and supported by the Business Manager for the Integrated MSK, Pain and Rheumatology Service (IMPReS). Any aneasthetic components of the post will be responsible to the Clinical Director for Anaesthetics.
