An exciting opportunity has arisen for a suitable qualified and experienced mammographer to take up the role of Operational Lead in the Breast Imaging Department

East Lancashire Breast Imaging Department is committed to providing high quality care for all clients/patients attending for Breast Imaging.  Imaging is undertaken for East Lancashire Breast Screening and Symptomatic Services. Our Breast Screening population is approximately 89,000 screening is delivered at the base unit as well as 11 locations across East Lancashire visited by our double roomed mobile screening van.


The department offers fully digital imaging and is equipped with 2 Hologic Dimensions 9000 1 Hologic Dimensions Tomo 9000 plus 2 Hologic Affirm Stereotactic biopsy units ,1 Fuji Amulet Tomosynthesis set, 3 Toshiba Ultrasound machines,  VAB Biopsy and Trident Specimen Cabinet.

You should be friendly with excellent communication skills, able to work within a team, but also under own initiative


You must have proven experience and a sound knowledge of both the National Breast Screening Service, and Symptomatic Breast Imaging.

You should have evidence of current ongoing CPD activities incorporating current advances in Breast Imaging 

You need excellent leadership skills, be able to prioritise tasks and give clear guidance and professional support to other staff support 




General Duties would include


  • Assisting the Breast Imaging Manager in the co-ordination of the professional, technical and administrative aspects of the East Lancashire Breast Screening Service and deputise in thier absence
  • Supervision of daily operational aspects of the service providing first line guidance for staff, optimising clinic efficiency
  • Responsible for ensuring the organisation and efficient running of clinics, including any required rota changes ensuring continuity of service and staff experience amongst all areas of service delivery e.g. screening, assessment, interventional mammography and symptomatic work
  • Responsible for the management of staff rotas, holiday requests and return to work interviews following sickness absence, including first stage sickness reviews


  • Perform all mammography examinations to the highest standard with precision and speed in line with the NHS Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) guidelines, and ensure that the client/patient episode is documented and carried out in accordance with departmental protocol
  • Use relevant knowledge, clinical experience and departmental protocols to select the appropriate mammographic projections and exposures to ensure optimum diagnostic imaging
  • Participate in the updating of procedures and protocols to reflect changes in practice
  • Adhere to departmental protocols and procedures including Ionising Radiation Regulations (1999) and Ionising Radiation (Medical Exposure) Regulations 2000
  • Actively participate and be responsible for equipment quality control and safety checks as defined in the departmental quality control manual, documenting all test parameters and reporting any equipment faults and/or test results outside acceptable limits to the QA Radiographer and Breast Imaging Manager, recording any action taken
  • Undertake clinical duties in the service in accordance with the service staffing rota
  • Take responsibility for the timely review of protocols, work instructions and training manuals in line with the Breast Unit’s Quality Management System. Conduct audits as required by the QMS, review and submit recommendations
  • Liaise with the Breast Imaging Manager and Screening Office Manager to ensure the three yearly screening service schedule is efficiently maintained
  • Contribute to effective service delivery by motivating and encouraging staff whilst actively working to reduce pressure in daily activities
  • Communicate effectively with staff within and outside the department to ensure the smooth operation of the service
  • Communicate with all mammographic equipment manufacturers regularly to ensure a safe and effective service is maintained
